Angela Merkel, leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU), has faced considerable hurdles in forming a coalition government in Germany, following the September 18 general election, which produced a hung parliament. After attempts at other coalition negotiations failed, the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) and Social Democrats (SPD) decided to enter into negotiations to construct a CDU/CSU-SPD ‘grand coalition’. Negotiations are set to end on November 12.
Much is at stake in this coalition of diverse political elements, particularly the structural economic reforms long-awaited by the country’s business community. The coalition negotiations will determine to what extent the conservative and social democratic agendas can be reconciled, and the depth and speed of these reforms.
