As an open network, the internet provides a constantly evolving highway on which an array of digital information can be carried quickly and efficiently between computers; for example, e-mail, documents, images, videos, web sites and other resources are made available through the world wide web. However, as internet use expands, and communities, companies and governments become increasingly dependent on it, there are growing concerns about the stability of the network. This conference call will address a number of questions on how the internet is likely to evolve over the short- to medium-term:
- As the range of internet-ready devices expands, will a pervasive ‘cloud’ of internet access become a reality? How will cloud computing change lifestyles, business and innovation?
- What regulatory interventions might be needed as the internet evolves and expands? How will regulatory authorities at local, national and international levels legislate, and will it be possible to find a balance between control and openness in the network?
- How well founded are growing concerns about the stability of the network? What is the short- to medium-term risk of the internet collapsing? What would be the impact of such a scenario?
- How will search engines develop as next generation ‘semantic web’ capabilities evolve? What will be the implications for users’ ability to access and disseminate information?
