In the weeks following former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri's assassination, a combination of unprecedented international pressure and protests by the anti-Syrian opposition in Lebanon have resulted in Syrian troop redeployments to the Bekaa Valley, the resignation of pro-Syrian Prime Minister Omar Karami and, more recently, Shiite counter-protests supporting Syria and Karami’s reinstatement. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has come under increasing international pressure to withdraw from Lebanon. The political crisis is likely to impact
