Regional (Dis)integration in Latin America

Thursday 1st June, 2006 - 16:00 BST / 11:00 EDT

Lack of progress on the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), a decline in the reputation and influence of the United States in the region and the rise of a number of so-called ‘new Left’ governments underpinned enthusiasm over prospects for regional integration in Latin America in recent years. The Andean Community, Mercosur and the proposed South American Community of Nations, launched in late 2004, were all seen as building blocks in this process, with Brazil under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva seeking to play the leading role in this process. However, the withdrawal of Venezuela from the Andean Community, deep divisions within Mercosur and the increased activism of President Hugo Chavez in the region have raised serious questions over the future of regional integration and over likely policy trends in the region.
