26th Oxford Analytica International Conference
Wednesday September 16 - Friday September 18, 2009
Christ Church, Oxford
We invite you to register your interest in attending the 26th Oxford Analytica International Conference, to be held at Christ Church, Oxford next September. The 2008 event coincided with the global financial crisis which not only changed the landscape of investment banking but had a major impact on the wider global economy. The 2009 Conference will take place at a time when much of the world is likely to be in recession and the geopolitical outlook increasingly complex.
During these difficult times, our analysis and judgement on a wide range of timely issues will enable Conference delegates to be better informed, gain a good understanding the risks ahead, and be able to answer the question: “What Next?”.
These are just a few examples of our discussions and predictions from the 2008 Conference:
- We looked at the impact of the credit crunch around the world and discussed how emerging markets would fare amidst global downturn. In Europe, we believed a recasting of state- and supra-state regulation of markets was likely to emerge. In the Middle East, we saw Dubai as being particularly exposed, but with, Abu Dhabi standing ready to come to its aid. In China, we said that a significant slowdown was likely and that the banking system would remain fragile.
- We discussed climate change, energy, trade and foreign policy under the next US administration. We felt that President-elect Barack Obama may attempt to hasten the redeployment of some forces to Afghanistan; we also said that he might forego signing further bilateral free trade agreements until the economy has recovered.
- We debated the threat posed by al-Qaida, argued that Western policies towards Israel-Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq would still fuel the Jihadist cause, and that more ‘home grown’ terrorists, particularly from the United Kingdom, would emerge. At the same time, security forces have improved their capacity to discover and pre-empt attacks.
In addition to over 70 experts from our global network of contributors, keynote speakers included:
- Dr. Robert M. Gates, U.S. Secretary of Defense
- Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor of Oxford University, former Governor of
Hong Kong
- H.E. Shaukat Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan
- Neville Isdell, Chairman of the Board, The Coca-Cola Company
