Daily Brief 25th anniversary
The Scholar-Expert 25 Years On
When Prior and scholar Lanfranc counselled William the Conqueror, victor at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, it was not the first time a scholar had advised the great and powerful – nor was it the last.
Today, the fact is that government and business leaders around the world are looking more and more to the scholar-expert for seasoned judgement on the meaning of world events. The 2009 Edelman Trust Barometer confirms the strong public trust in scholar-experts as “extremely or very credible” figures relative to other sources of information and analysis.
In the forefront of providing such judgement is the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief, founded in 1984. Today (Monday September 28, 2009) it celebrates twenty-five years of channelling the prescient analysis of a network of over a thousand contributors to top decision-makers around the world.
The Oxford Analytica Daily Brief is modelled on the US President’s Daily Brief and is the brainchild of Dr David Young, former Administrative Assistant to Dr Henry Kissinger in the White House.
During his time in the White House, Young worked on the team preparing the PDB. On leaving government, he believed that a similar service, drawing on a global network of contributors, could be created to provide high quality analysis to business and government leaders needing to understand the implications of global events.
Twenty-five years later, the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief is read by senior figures in some 50 governments, more than 150 corporations and in most major international institutions from the UN, EU, and NATO to the World Bank and IMF.
“The Daily Brief draws on the wisdom and seasoned judgment of the senior faculty at Oxford and other preeminent universities around the world,” says Dr. Young. “The vision is to provide clients with timely, authoritative and impartial analysis of global events on a daily basis.”
The fact that the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief is celebrating twenty-five years of publication is powerful testimony to the high standing it enjoys among its world-class clients, many of whom have been receiving the service for years.
Clients can also benefit from the firm’s Consultancy Practice, which draws on the intellectual capital of the same network of scholar-experts.
Dr Young concludes,
“In the Information Age everyone knows what is happening, but few know what it means. In all our work, our mission is to explain the implications of events, to answer the question: ‘What does it mean?’
